Laser Aftercare
Proper aftercare is critical to your results and your skin's health. Please read and follow these instructions after every laser session.
Immediately After Treatment
- A cold compress or ice pack (wrapped in a clean cloth) may be applied to the treated area for 10–15 minutes to reduce swelling and discomfort.
- The area may appear red, swollen, or feel like a mild sunburn — this is completely normal and typically subsides within a few hours.
- Blistering can occur and is a normal part of the laser process. Do not pop blisters; allow them to heal on their own.
- Apply a thin layer of a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer or aloe vera gel to soothe the skin.
The First 72 Hours
- Keep the treated area clean and dry. Gently wash with mild, fragrance-free soap and lukewarm water.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel — do not rub.
- Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer or healing ointment (Aquaphor, aloe vera) 2–3 times daily.
- If blisters form, keep them intact and covered with a non-stick bandage if needed.
- Avoid tight clothing or anything that creates friction over the treated area.
What to Avoid
- No sun exposure on the treated area for a minimum of 4 weeks. UV exposure can cause hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation.
- No tanning beds, self-tanner, or spray tan on or near the treated area.
- No swimming pools, hot tubs, lakes, or soaking baths for at least 1 week.
- No picking, scratching, or popping blisters — this increases the risk of scarring and infection.
- Avoid shaving over the treated area until it is fully healed.
- No exfoliants, retinoids, acids, or harsh skincare products on the treated area until fully healed.
- Avoid intense exercise or activities that cause heavy sweating for 24–48 hours.
Sun Protection Is Essential
- Apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen to the treated area every day, even on cloudy days.
- Sun exposure between sessions significantly increases the risk of adverse reactions and can slow results.
- Protective clothing (long sleeves, hats) is strongly recommended when outdoors.
Signs of Normal Healing
- Redness, mild swelling, and warmth in the first 24–48 hours.
- Frosting (a white or grey appearance) immediately after treatment — this resolves within minutes to hours.
- Blistering, pinpoint bleeding, or bruising — all are expected responses to laser energy.
- The tattoo ink may appear darker initially before it begins to fade over the following weeks.
- Itching as the skin heals.
When to Contact Us
- Blisters that are very large, spreading, or show signs of infection (pus, increasing redness, warmth).
- Fever or red streaking radiating from the treated area.
- Significant pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medication.
- Any reaction that concerns you — we would rather hear from you than have you wait.
Between Sessions
- Allow a minimum of 6–8 weeks between laser sessions to allow the immune system to clear the fragmented ink.
- Keep the area moisturized and protected from the sun throughout your treatment series.
- Results are cumulative — fading continues for weeks after each session as your body processes the ink.
- The number of sessions required varies based on ink color, depth, age of the tattoo, and skin type.
