Tattoo Aftercare
Following these instructions carefully will protect your investment and ensure your tattoo heals beautifully. When in doubt, reach out — we're happy to help.
The First 24 Hours
- Leave the bandage or wrap applied by your artist in place for the time they recommend — typically 2–4 hours for standard wrap, or up to 3 days for a second-skin/Saniderm bandage.
- When you remove the bandage, wash the tattoo gently with clean hands using a fragrance-free, mild soap (e.g. Dial Gold, Dr. Bronner's unscented). Rinse with lukewarm water.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub.
- Apply a very thin layer of unscented lotion or a dedicated tattoo aftercare product (Aquaphor, Lubriderm, or similar). Less is more — the skin needs to breathe.
- Do not re-bandage unless instructed by your artist.
Days 2–14: The Healing Phase
- Wash the tattoo 2–3 times daily with the same mild soap and lukewarm water.
- Moisturize lightly after each wash. Keep the skin hydrated but never over-saturated.
- Peeling and light flaking is completely normal — do not pick, scratch, or peel the skin.
- Itching is expected. Gently tap the area to relieve the itch; do not scratch.
- Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattoo to avoid friction.
What to Avoid
- No soaking — avoid pools, hot tubs, lakes, and long baths for at least 2–3 weeks.
- No direct sun exposure on the fresh tattoo. Once healed, always apply SPF 50+ sunscreen to protect the ink.
- No gym or heavy sweating for at least 48–72 hours, or until the surface is no longer raw.
- Do not use petroleum jelly (Vaseline), scented lotions, or products containing alcohol.
- Do not shave over the tattoo until it is fully healed.
Signs of Normal Healing
- Redness and mild swelling in the first 24–48 hours.
- Light peeling or flaking of the outer skin layer.
- Slight dullness or cloudiness of the ink — color and contrast return once fully healed.
- Itching during the peeling phase.
When to Contact Us
- Excessive redness, swelling, or warmth that worsens after 48 hours.
- Pus, oozing, or a foul odor from the tattoo.
- Fever or red streaking radiating from the tattoo.
- Severe allergic reaction (rash, hives, difficulty breathing — seek emergency care immediately).
Long-Term Care
- Keep healed tattoos moisturized daily to maintain vibrancy.
- Always apply broad-spectrum SPF 50+ sunscreen before sun exposure.
- Stay hydrated — healthy skin holds ink better.
- Schedule a touch-up if needed once the tattoo is fully healed (typically 4–6 weeks).
